Marauders Shanghai Game One

Posted by Crash Morgan on October 30th, 2022

Two batters in, Pennsylvania had a lead. They would never trail in a shocking Game One result at Vancouver.

That lead came via a Matt Olson home run off Charlie Morton.

The game did not feature a match-up of aces. But their vices stood admirably all night long.

For the Nanooks, Morton gave up just one earned run over seven innings. Walker Buehler did the same for the visitors.

An error by Santiago Espinal contributed to a long seventh inning which saw the Marauders take the lead.

The miscue followed a leadoff walk to Matt Chapman. The Vancouver thirdbaseman was unable to handle Chris Taylor's grounder.

A one-out walk to Olson loaded the bases, and Espinal was able to redeem himself -- briefly -- by retiring Chapman at the plate when Christian Yelich bid for an RBI groundout. But Morton was tiring, and unable to find the plate with Michael Brantley at the dish.

That would account for the winning run. The Buccos would add a ninth-inning insurance run with a J.P. Crawford round-tripper.

Espinal had one final chance for a reprieve, representing the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth. But Aroldis Champman struck out the infielder on three pitches to end the game.

Game Two is tomorrow night.
